I Can’t Hula Hoop!

How are you doing with your hooping?

I have talked to a lot of people who have taken up hooping (obviously!), and there are a couple of things that most people struggle with. Let me share with you the major problems that people have and let me see if I can help you a bit.

 

1. Having HEAPS of trouble hooping.

Okay if you are having a whole lot of trouble even doing the Side to Side, chances are that you need a better hoop! If you have dashed down to your local bulk discount store and grabbed the cheapest hoop, chances are high that it will be really hard to use. Those ones that kids use at school are very difficult to use because they are so light. There is just no weight in it to keep the momentum going.

If this is a problem you are having – you need a weighted hoop my friend.  This type of hoop is used by professionals as well as beginners. It is just that most beginners start out with a really poor quality hoop and they never get good because the cheap ones are so hard to use!

Think about playing a piano or other musical instrument. If you aren’t very good, playing on a Steinway piano will make you sound better and will be a lot nicer to play and make you want to practice all the time. If you have a Fisher Price “My First Keyboard”, you are highly likely to quit because it is a pain in the neck to play and sounds awful.

This is exactly the same with a quality hoop. Make sure you check out the link I gave you and have a grab yourself one ASAP. Don’t settle for second best when it comes to your body and fitness!

 

2. Having no time or space to practice.

This is something that everybody in the world suffers from, not just you! I have mentioned this a few times in various pieces I have written, but it is just such a huge problem that I feel it is good to talk about it.

Think about what matters to you – you only get one body in this life

There are some things in life that are important to us and we make time for them no matter what, am I right?

I mean, when you need to go to the bathroom, you just go, you don’t need to find the time or motivation do you?

That is the sort of state that those guys & gals with incredible bodies are in all the time.

They don’t have to get motivated or find the time to exercise, they don’t even question it. They force the time to be available no matter what they have to sacrifice. Some people I will miss just about anything to stick to their exercise schedule because it is so important to them. I am not saying that you have to give up your social life by any means – I am all for having a fantastic social life! What I am saying is this:

YOU have to make a decision about what is important to you my friend.

Sure it’d be great to be a concert pianist, get a pilots licence, have a great body, learn about quantum cosmology, become a painter and have millions of dollars in the bank.

However, life is short! We can’t have everything, but we can have some things, and the beauty is that you get to choose those things

Too often we get stuck thinking about all the things we would like to do and not just actually getting started and committing to a few things we would like to do and getting really freaking good at them.

This may seem like I am getting off the topic of not having enough time to keep fit and get in shape, but it is all related. We all have the same 24 hours, it is just up to you how busy you choose to be during those hours and what you want to do during them.

 

Here are a few ways you can steal back some time off yourself:

-Give up the social media. Seriously, social media just makes you think everybody else has awesome lives and yours sucks! People only talk about the 1-2 hours a week they actually have fun, at least limit yourself to a couple of minutes a day for a quick scan to keep up with the goss, but don’t spend all day on it.

-Quit the telly. A lot of people watch a lot of telly. I have nothing against watching comedies or good movies, but a lot of television is primarily designed just to get you hooked. Then they bomb you with ads for half the time. This time would be way better spent getting in seriously good shape.

-Take a break from surfing the web. Sure it feels productive sometimes, but you know that you can waste some serious time doing this. Take some time to create yourself an amazing body and give up wasting time online.

-Record what you do for a day. This is something that can help hugely if you are finding you have no time for exercise. This task is incredibly difficult to do though, because it exposes our flaws, which we like to think don’t exist. Carry a notepad and keep it to 15 minute increments and see where your time is spent, and be honest!

  1. This is an excellent article. I ALWAYS make time to practice as often as possible. As long as I have the health and the energy, I will practice. When people give up because they don’t have the time, the space, or whatever the reason, I know it is because they aren’t quite motivated enough. One of my favorite quotes: “If you really want it, you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse”.
