A Hooper’s Guide to Festival Preparation

A Hooper’s Guide to Festival Preparation

Even though festival season is coming to an end for 2015, we wanted to help you get familiarized with planning for next season! The tickets are purchased. The outfits are primped to perfection. The squad is assembled, everyone has been practicing their flow art, and the lineup has been memorized. There is nothing quite like getting ready for a festival. Nothing is as exciting as being surrounded by good music, good friends, and good vibes. However, packing for the festival can add stress to this otherwise blissful situation. Paranoia about forgetting something essential is to be expected. We know you won’t forget your hoops, but what about everything else you’ll need for the adventure? This article breaks the festival necessities into the main categories to take into consideration when packing so that your preparation will go as smoothly as possible. Making memories will be easy and fun if everyone is properly prepared! 1. Camping Supplies Let’s start with the absolute essentials. You need a place to sit and sleep. Along with the tent (and whatever materials are necessary to set up said tent), pack some extra sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. I’ve found that a mattress topper makes a great travel bed as you can lay it across the trunk of your vehicle and put the rest of your supplies on top for the trip. Designate some blankets you don’t mind getting dirty as a sitting area, or, if sitting on the ground isn’t really your thing, bring some bag chairs along. These are easy to carry, and they’re actually very comfortable! Also, tapestries make a great addition to...

You Won’t Believe the Looks on these Hooper Faces!

You Won’t Believe the Looks on these Hooper Faces!

Concentration is key to many things. Focus, determination, and dedication are required in addition to concentration to improve yourself as a hooper. There is a consequence to being so dedicated, however. Concentration face is a real epidemic that is sweeping the hooping community by storm as we focus on the appearance of our transitions and combinations and leave the appearance of our face to be determined on its own. Also commonly referred to as “derp faces”, Concentration Face (CF) has affected beginners and experts alike, and everyone in between. Below is a compilation of hilariously wonderful concentration face pictures. Just know, you are not alone. We all exhibit concentration face at times. And we should embrace our CF!     “Shhh I’m hooping.”   Anne Marshall, photo by FotoVet Photography       “I’m a model.” Ciera Savage, photo by FotoVet Photography     “Pretty Colors!” Jayson Halgren       “Whoa that’s a little close to my face.”   Joseph Lastowski       “Well this is embarassing.” Madison Graves       “Why are you taking pictures? WHY?!” Naomi Schaffhausen     “Feelin my hoop, feelin my self!” Racquel Devoreah Pixler       “Just keep spinning, just keep spinning.” Tree Sa       “Hoop in the air and I just don’t care!” Yvonne Elise Early     “I’m jumping through this hoop so hard right now.” Melissa Stockwell, photo by Sylvie Koseff     “I’m rockin this hoop right now!”     “What are these things on my hands?” Orlala Wentink     “Did you see what just happened?!” Ally Fulena     ********** “Enter...
Labeling Hooper Styles and Flow Types

Labeling Hooper Styles and Flow Types

Photo above taken by Dawn McClintock Throughout my journey, I have had all kinds of people telling me how to hoop, what I am doing “wrong”, that hooping without smiling is unprofessional or makes me look bored, that hooping without dancing isn’t really hooping, and that I wasn’t flowing because I wasn’t dancing to their specifications and what they consider “right. I am sure you have experienced this, too. I never have liked being told how to do things. That is the reason I started hooping. The freedom and versatility was something that made it awesome for me. For years I have seen/heard people talking about how some hoopers do this and some do that. Some hoopers trick, some hoopers dance, some flow, and so on. They are making observations that don’t necessarily need made or pointed out. Many of them are criticizing and discouraging their natural chosen speed or style. I say let’s STOP LABELING OTHERS. I say feel free to label your own style, if you wish. I understand it is human nature to label things, categorize them and find out where to put them in your mind. Let’s resist that and start thinking of hoopers as a unit – of all those who enjoy their hoops. However, let’s not limit ourselves either. Only you can choose what you feel you want out of your hooping. If you feel you want to explore all styles, you definitely should. If we all fit into one box, hooping would be super boring and predictable. We like to keep the surprise element alive. Not knowing what to expect from a...
